The problem
Converting and editing PDFs is an everyday need, but the popular online tools tend to be heavy and slow, and push users toward accounts or paid plans for basic tasks. Reliable document conversion, such as turning Word or Office files into PDF, is also hard to do well in a typical web stack: JavaScript alone can’t produce faithful conversions, and running a full office engine doesn’t fit in a serverless frontend. The challenge was to build a fast, lightweight PDF tool suite that could handle real conversions, rank on Google and pay for itself.
The solution
I built LowPDF as a Next.js application deployed on Vercel, giving users a fast interface for their PDF tasks. For document conversions, I split the heavy work into a separate FastAPI microservice in Python, hosted on Railway, which uses LibreOffice to produce accurate output. The frontend stays light and quick while conversions run on infrastructure suited to them. For discoverability, I set up automated sitemaps with next-sitemap and submitted them to Google Search Console. I monetized the site through CPA offers and ClickBank affiliate products, and explored TikTok and social media to bring in traffic.
The result
LowPDF is live as a full PDF tool suite with a clean split between a fast frontend and a dedicated conversion service, so each part can scale and be updated independently. The site is indexed through Search Console, has a monetization model in place, and is set up to grow through search and social channels.
